Rival 1-Quart Gel Canister Ice Cream Maker Review: My kids & I love it!
My husband bought me this ice cream maker 2 years ago for Christmas. I have never made my own ingredients for it but buy the premade vanilla mix and add extras when the ice cream is done. The kids love to do this part too.
It took me a couple of tries to get it right. The first few times it was very slushy but still tasted yummy. After that I started putting the bowl in the freezer for about 15 minutes after it was done mixing. I like the mushy stuff but it tends to melt very fast! My 3 kids just love when I make them ice cream, the only bad part is the waiting for it and the machine is pretty loud so the kids know when it’s going and are dying the whole time! I would really recommend this, you need to pay attention and read the directions though. Maybe some day I will make it with my own ingredients but the mix is very good and that way we all get whatever kind we want.

I have had this model for several years. I use it about once a month, and it has not given me any trouble. It does not freeze ice cream hard (if it did, the dasher would not be able to turn – duh); After 20 -30 minutes of churning, when a soft-serve texture has developed, I generally transfer the ice cream into a lidded plastic container, and let it set up in the freezer. It’s important to cool your custard in the refrigerator (I set mine, covered, on the back porch in the wintertime) before pouring it into the canister. The motor is a bit noisy (not as bad as a blender of a food processor). The cleanup is easy because the motor, clear plastic cover, and dasher all come apart and a quick rinse with warm water is usually all that is necessary. Also use warm water to clean the cannister, and wipe it out quickly so that the water doesn’t freeze on it. Don’t freeze it upside down; you want the gel distributed in the bottom of the canister, (I learned this the hard way)and cover the top with a plastic bag to keep the canister clean. I think this is the better choice than the 1.5 quart model, because I stongly suspect that’s the same product with a larger cannister, but no increase in motor power.
