Many people swear by the traditional way to make ice cream, with ice and rock salt and lots of turning of the crank. The Rival 4-Quart Electric Ice Cream Maker keeps the ice and salt, but takes away the cranking. A powerful motor mixes up to a gallon of homemade ice cream, sorbet, or frozen yogurt; the quantity is nice for large gatherings or just for people who enjoy their ice cream. When broken down, the ice cream maker is easy to transport, making it perfect for cookouts or camping–provided there’s electricity. The instruction booklet comes with 18 ice cream recipes, including Rocky Road and Praline Almond Fudge.
Cleaning is easy; just use hot soapy water. Towel dry the inner can; air-drying may result in spots. The motor section is not immersible. When assembled, the ice cream maker is 12 inches across by 16 inches tall, but it disassembles into outer and inner canisters, paddle and motor. Rival provides a limited warranty against defects in material and workmanship under normal use conditions.–Garland Withers

This is my third ice cream maker in 5 years. It’s the least expensive and by far the best.
I went through two of those “freeze the bowl” ice cream makers and really disliked them. Even after following the directions to the letter, the ice cream still came out really soft and later hardened into a block of ice crystals. Then, I finally broke down and bought this old-fashioned $26 Rival. Yes, finally I am creating the kind of ice cream I remember my parents making. Creamy, firm and well textured right out of the ice cream machine.
For $26 you don’t get much in the way of quality machinery. Yes, the canister is flimsy metal, but I’ve had no problem with it denting whatsoever. As you can see from the image, the plastic motor cover has vents in it, so you have to be careful when pouring the ice into the bucket (so as not to get water in there). Otherwise, I think it’s quite a bargain for the price.
