Many people swear by the traditional way to make ice cream, with ice and rock salt and lots of turning of the crank. The Rival 4-Quart Electric Ice Cream Maker keeps the ice and salt, but takes away the cranking. A powerful motor mixes up to a gallon of homemade ice cream, sorbet, or frozen yogurt; the quantity is nice for large gatherings or just for people who enjoy their ice cream. When broken down, the ice cream maker is easy to transport, making it perfect for cookouts or camping–provided there’s electricity. The instruction booklet comes with 18 ice cream recipes, including Rocky Road and Praline Almond Fudge.

Cleaning is easy; just use hot soapy water. Towel dry the inner can; air-drying may result in spots. The motor section is not immersible. When assembled, the ice cream maker is 12 inches across by 16 inches tall, but it disassembles into outer and inner canisters, paddle and motor.
